What is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis?

bioelectrical testingBiolelectrical Impedance is the technology used to accurately measure body composition. Traditionally Body Mass Index (BMI) has been used to measure body composition but this does not tell the whole story.

Biolelectrical Impedance Analysis sends a small signal through the body at a pre-determined frequency, the resistance (or impedance) to the flow of this signal is measured, and through known and understood resistant qualities of the different tissues in the body, the amount of that tissue can be calculated.

For example, fat has a high resistance to the flow of this signal, and lean muscle mass has a low resistance, since it consists of electrolytes and fluids. Therefore an accurate assessment of the body’s composition can be made and consequently used to help plan your bespoke fitness and nutrition package.

To conclude, the body is made up of 3 major compartments:

  • Body Fat
  • Lean Muscle Mass
  • Hydration (fluids)

By using our Bodystat Analysis machine we can give you accurate, recordable information which can be assessed throughout the programme to accurately measure the improvements you’ve achieved.

Fitness Testing

At the Functional Training Collective we use well respected Submaximal Performance Testing as a way of estimating either VO2 max or "aerobic fitness" in sports medicine to determine your level of fitness. These tests purposely do not reach the maximum of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. In other words submaximal tests are a safe way of determining the fitness of individuals where fitness levels are not currently known.

One of the tests that we use at FTC is The Chester Step Test which is an approved selection test for public services assessing the aerobic capability of the applicant. It is specifically designed to be a sub-maximal assessment of the individual’s maximal aerobic capability. The Chester Step Test is used by sports coaches and trainers to estimate an athlete’s maximum oxygen uptake better known as VO2 Max. The Chester Step Test is especially useful for those people who are applying for either the Emergency Services or the Armed Forces, but is also a great way of initially assessing an individual before a fitness plan is put in place. It is also highly suited to players of sports like football, hockey or rugby.
